We will get some transfer guys also. We will be fine next season. Still waiting to hear about AJ staying or going. Hearing Marshall is probably staying .

Furmans starting lineup is all players recruited out of HS, including 2 5th year seniors. Just not how we saw fit to build the program. I'm not sure you can build a winning program in the traditional way anymore. Remember the 5th year guys had that extension for the extra year because of covid. That is a NCAA gift that is very near gone. A 17- or 18-year-old will have trouble going against a 22–23-year-old player because of obvious body development differences. Nowadays if you do sign a good one out of HS, he has most likely been courted by P5 schools who didn't offer but will be aware if he sets the woods on fire at the smaller school. So, you get him, work on his S&C development, but then he is gone. The 1 or 2-year xfer on the other hand already has the developed body and comes physically ready to play for you. I am not saying that I like this situation because I don't, but I do see the perplexity of the issue. Of course, you still sign some good HS players, but you better know how to play the Portal field, or you could be in trouble. Afore mentioned Furman itself has recently added some graduate degrees probably specifically to open the door for xfers.

Sure. It has to be a balance. Those schools more able to attract/retain talent will be rewarded though. Every school will lose some, no doubt. What Furman has been able to do to this point given the environment is impressive.
Building a program full of players like Logan Dye, while supplementing through the portal will be more sustainable, IMO. The Portal is a real crap shoot as our own current roster can attest.

I certainly understand the issue of older kids, that's one we've used to our benefit the last couple of years for sure.

It’s like you have to recruit good freshman, but just not that good or they will leave. We can get guys that either were at a lower level and want to move up or didn’t pan out at the high level aka Quez types.

Posted a diatribe about the blueprint Furman basketball had laid out about a decade or so ago about how to build a successful program. Their patience is paying off in spades. Now 25 D1 wins on the season.

Yes, but there are 300 schools that laid out the same blue print that suck. Picking one team who has a good year and then doing a look back to measure success isn’t really scientific, but it is a good way to support your hypothesis. Pick each team in the tournament and then do a 10 year look back and you wind up right here. The truth is, Furman has a good coach (and the UVA player lost his fricking mind with that desperation heave—talk about crapping the bed in the clutch) and he did a good job keeping his players from hitting the portal. Samford had that when they struck gold with Saylers, Daniels and Rawlings. Not so much with Glover. We’ll see if the Furman coach shows loyalty to the school like he expects of his players when the big programs come calling. The magic at this level doesn’t stick around very long because the players and the coaches are ready to move on to the next level and it is hard to replace excellence with excellence. The players using the portal are no different than the coaches who are moving on up.
For every Furman, there are 250 teams that had the same plan that aren’t in the big dance.
I will grant you this, any success plan starts with 1. Hire a really good coach. To maintain that success, you have to keep said really good coach or be really, really good at hiring replacements. There aren’t many AD’s who can navigate the cornucopia of power at a university who can consistently pick a winner. We have a decent coach, but I suspect he’d hit the first big time offer to a P5 school in a heartbeat. How do you expect to keep a team together for 4-5 years when the coach is ready to move on at the first big offer that comes along. Loyalty is just a word in athletics, just like family

They've had 2 coaches in a row carry this out and have another on the bench who's ready to carry it on when Richey gets hired out. Just as they did when Medved left.
There are certainly different ways to skin the cat. But I do appreciate their approach and willingness to carry it out.
Guy at Kennesaw State has done something very identical.

Don’t you think it is ironic that we ask kids to play for four or five years and complain about the portal (which giveth and taketh away), but coaches chase the money and limelight and we take it for granted?
