I'd prefer to keep the registration required but I'm game to allowing guests to posts until it gets too big of a pain to monitor. I'll need another moderator or two to help with deleting posts if necessary.
I think it worked well on the old board by having guests register before posting. However, I understand and can appreciate that moderators might not have ample time to vet folks.
Just so you guys know, right now, we have open enrollment. Open enrollment means that for anyone that applies, membership is automatically granted by board, and they can immediately post. That can be changed to a system where a request for membership must be approved before a person can post. If 97 decides that's the way he wants to operate, we'll change it. Right now, in getting all the old board members over and registered here, the open enrollment is the best, as it requires no actions from the moderator.
On the Catamount Sports Forum, I use the same open membership with automatic approvals for several reason. The system does notify me of all new members, I then check their IP address to determine where the member's IP address is located (if it's out of the US, it's usually a spammer), the board will also allow me to check their IP address against known spammers IP address. So, I do these two checks on all new members, if it's an out of country address or matches a spammer IP address, I just block them (their IP address). The process if very simple and I block most spammers before they actually do any spamming on the board.
If spam does pop up on the board, it's very simple to delete that post(s).

As for approving posters, I'm fine with open and approving like The Cats is doing on the Catamounts forum. That's similar to what we did in previous iterations of the old board. Before it freaked out, my only approval was looking at the email address. Spammers almost never had a normal looking email address. If it looked "off", then I'd check the IP address. It doesn't take that long and as long as I get an email notification, I should be able to approve them pretty quickly.
You have to be registered on any other board to post.
The Mercer board lets visitors post, and on several occasions we have let visitors post on the Catamount Sports Forum.
The only problem I had with visitors posting were the anti-Speir posters took advantage and sometimes got ugly as visitors, I spent too much time cleaning up and deleting posts, so I ended it. If the football program ever gets back on track, I will open back up to allowing visitors, because it does increase folks that post on the board, and for a moderator, that what you want, increased activity.
I think only die-hard Samford Fans should be allowed to post here. I would think some type of linkage with 23 & Me could be implemented requiring DNA testing to prove one’s verified affiliation with Samford.
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he today that sheds his blood with me, shall be my brother.

Smurf: 77SU, I sort of had the same issue. That "1" is very subtle. I went in and changed my notification settings to receive an email if I receive a private message.

77SU: Just read it. Hadnt noticed the "1" on the Messages tab. Had gotten spoiled getting the email saying I had a message. Sent you a reply message.

SU DOG: 77SU did you get a PM I sent you a few days ago?

The Cats: Just refresh the board, by clicking "The Dog Pound" or the "Home" button. That updates the board and brings up any "new" posts that's made while you have been on reading or posting.

The Cats: Click on the /\ "up arrow" on the right side of the board, it will take you to the top without scrolling. The latest post will be the top post under the "pinned" threads.

Cujo: How do you get back up to the top of the board without having to scroll back to the top? Also, how can you jump to the latest post, without having to scroll through all of the posts? Asking for a friend.

bulldogfan: Like Cujo, I'm shouting just because it's here and I finally got switched over. I like the new look. Will have to figure out the new navigation.

Visitor: There will be a football season. Not sure how long it will be, but too many programs will go under without a football season, after just missing the income from March Madness.

The Cats: We hope you like the new board, if anyone has any suggestions, please let 97 or me know. We can change pics, add boards, assist with avatars, etc. let us know.

Smurf: Thanks, The Cats

The Cats: Also, since we only have one board, threads that have a new post will automatically move to the top. If there are multiple threads with new posts, the very last "new" post will be the top one.
Jun 24, 2020 21:36:42 GMT -5
The Cats: If your are logged onto the board, you will see a on each thread that has new posts since your last visit. But not if you visit as a guest.

Smurf: Is there a good way to easily recognize when a new post has been posted in a particular thread other than looking at the "last post" time stamp?
