This city has never been very cooperative, IMO, with our school. Didn't we sell them the land for their high school for $1.00? A few years ago, buildings on West Campus were finally approved after months of Homewood City resistance as I recall. Buying adjacent to the campus houses has also been under attack for years. Asking for permission has seemed to me to be more like begging for permission - bringing hat in hand and bowing on knees. Homewood doesn't seem to recognize what a jewel it has in Samford University. Maybe our delegation can swing the one more vote needed, and this problem will be solved. BTW Homewood, have y'all heard that there is a pandemic? thehomewoodstar.com/news/aug-4-2020-planning-commission/

Who remembers "C" dorms? Deja vu, all over again?

I have found in life that if I need someone's permission to do something, that if I engage them early in the process and involve them in the decision making, it has a much higher likelihood of coming to pass than me deciding what to do, spending 2m dollars and then asking then asking the ultimate decision maker if it's ok. Maybe that's just me.

Maybe that's just me. This approach works really well in the Environmental Planning world also. Nothing like stopping a multi-million dollar missile project, when you tell the General the reason we need his approval signature, ‘Sir, the plane is on the runway.” True life story. The process is called community involvement for a reason. At least a phone call or two could have been made before SU hit the checkout button on Amazon.

Now that you have told us that story, are we all susceptible to being "suicided"? Just in case, I did not read 77's disclosure of a topic secret mission in his last post. I didn't even skim it.

Of course we don't know just what circumstances were involved in the purchase. I do know, however, that in my career, my peers and I had to deal with ridiculous and unnecessary delays from bureaucracy. Eventually we adopted the following philosophy that served us well: "It is far easier to obtain forgiveness than to obtain permission."

In the interest of fairness, I feel compelled to say that the city of Homewood does have several Samford supporters and alumni in their government. Mayor Scott McBrayer is a former Bulldog football player and Councilman Britt Thames is a Samford alumnus. There are also a few others. Still past history, IMO at least, confirms that the city, in many instances, has been rather hard for Samford to deal with.

All the more reason to talk to your friendly neighborhood representative, even if to present a "hypothetical" situation. Isn't that what Salem's Diner is for? Forgiveness rather than permission typically works well, except when the cost involves lots of zeros.

That's the wonderful thing about the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, the environmental impact statements and assessments are all approved for public release, so everyone is okay. I've been walking a fine line for a long time between the folks wanting to get things done as quickly as possible and the people who don't want the other guys to do anything at all. No wonder mediators and arbitration experts are paid as well as they are. BTW, when you meet someone in Huntsvegas and you ask what they do, if the answer is, "I work on the Arsenal" then you know you don't have a need to know.

I sit on the city council in Alpharetta. Are we sure the planning commission isnt a recomending body?
Votes typically don't come before a city council unless the applicant has the votes. I would imagine that Samford has spent a great deal of time with Homewood's community development department and their council.
If they haven't it's time for the donor's to find the no votes and lobby for change. Typically council races come in off cycle years from primaries and general elections.
I can't imagine a world where there aren't samford supporters on the city council.
