Nothing like a road trip. Hotel, eating out, seeing the sights, meeting fans and making friends and basketball. Wish I was there. Actually, I wish the tournament was in Chattanooga, Birmingham or Atlanta. Asheville is Furman’s choice. Everything to please Furman. The geographic center of the SoCon (10 schools’ long./lat. coordinates) is here… 1685 E Poinsett Street Extension, Greer, SC (conveniently located nearby the Persecuted Tattoo shop - Players could add some new ink between games)… …If only there were also a nearby basketball arena… Oh wait…This address is 18 miles from Bon Secours Wellness Arena, North Academy Street, Greenville, SC. Greenville has an amazingly vibrant and safe (unlike Asheville) downtown. The SoCon should be doing everything they can to move the SoCon Hoops Tournament to Greenville. And, nowhere else is even close. But…by contract…Asheville it is, for at least 3 more seasons. I'm not sure I'm willing to accept this as true. I'm going to need a PowerPoint slide and proof (i need a regional map, location of the schools and the coordinates you are measuring. I realized that Furman is the center of the universe for you guys, but . . . I guess Furman is the center of the universe for the SoCon too, so you are probably right, but I'd still like to see the back up for this claim.

And if not, why not beautiful Timmons Arena?

And if not, why not beautiful Timmons Arena? Or the renovated Seibert Hall and additional practice gyms. That is, unless the Gulf South Conference pays more.

Personally, I don't think any amount of winning will carry a large contingent of Bulldog fans to Asheville. It's just too far.
Any location closer would be good for the dogs, IMO.

Smurf is okay with Asheville since he can make it from his house in north central North Carolina to downtown Asheville in three hours.
Bojangles Arena in Charlotte might one day work, but the Big South has that site secured and it is also farther away from the Birmingham peeps than Asheville is. It isn't much younger than SU DOG too so there is that.
Closer to the western front, Huntsville might be an option. That brings in Birmingham, Chattanooga and ETSU into the fold. 77SU would love that.

Smurf, I don't get how you include ETSU, but Mercer could be included. Fifteen miles and 13 minutes more to Huntsville than Ashville according to Google. So for all practical purposes that is a wash for the Bears. Also, Atlanta area with strong alumni groups for most all the SoCon schools for the most part is slightly closer to Huntsville than Ashville. Frankly, I think smurf has a reasonable idea. Of course, purple people and ankle biters would veto it as a completely outrageous idea.

Yeah, you are probably correct. It seemed closer than it was before I checked it against Google maps.
I thought about Atlanta. Certainly there are plenty of things to do there such as the Coca Cola museum or chasing down domestic terrorists if you grow really bored, but I do like the smaller town atmosphere that Asheville and perhaps a Huntsville might bring.
Admittedly Asheville is centrally located. I would imagine Citadel and VMI fans feel the location is a bit far west, but between them their schools might only bring two mini vans full of fans anyway and neither school is going to consistently challenge for a title regardless.
While all of this may be speculation, if the Asheville leaders don't get a hold of the crime over there, I can definitely see the SoCon looking for another home for its tournament.

Mrs77 is saying it's hotter in the arena tonight than for all of the other games. I told it's because of all of the additional _urman fans blowing hot air.

Now I understand why _urman fans are the way they are. They paint F U on their faces when the aren't even 10 years old.
