If the game didn’t start at 8 pm, it wasn’t on a Wednesday church night (which also happens to be Ash Wednesday), and it wasn’t on Valentine’s Day, then I totally would get the whining on crowd size. There wasn’t even a promotion to entice people to come out tonight. I’d prefer to be in person so I could avoid this horrible audio feed. But on a night where all these different stars aligned, you can’t demand a packed arena. Outside of 4-5 home games the last few years, the crowd was no different than what it has been. That’s the problem. We are winning. Usually people come out for a winner.

I may wrong — and folks in the know certainly will correct me— but I think most of the “community” support the last couple of years has been Bucky’s MB and poker buddies. Other than a group of deeply devoted alumni (including a couple who drive from Huntsville for every home game) who have been there consistently through the good and the bad times, there isn’t much alumni support from the local community.

When I read that our next home game is against the _urples, I went to our schedule to check. That is correct, but I also noticed something that needs to be fixed. Our schedule indicates: Hopefully, the team is not planning on leaving before the championship game on Monday night, 11 March 2024. Attachments:

It was fricking Valentines Day and the game was late on a school night. I live in town and I was zonked out in my lazy boy at tipoff (I’m not proud of that). I could have driven over, but I didn’t want to be getting home at 10:30/11:00 that night. I suspect others chose to eat with their valentines and didn’t plan their post-dinners around basketball. Samford is for lovers, after all. If 1,300 show up for Furman, I’ll give it to you, but for the present I think the criticism is misplaced (I’m all for criticizing, just don’t see it here). If you want to see Samford basketball catch fire, win the damn tournament. Many on here including me have been waiting for the let down. Imagine how the public feels. I was a diehard, through ups and downs, I was there. Scott Padgett broke me. I am faithful follower, but I have not been compelled to make the trip even with recent success. And speaking of recent success, I know the 20 win seasons of the past two years are included in the accolades, but we didn’t have a chance in either of those years of making the big dance. It was an improvement, but it was nothing to get excited about. This year is different. Give it time to catch fire and stay lit. On that note, has anyone looked at the scores against the last four opponents, 3 of which are top contenders. Notice anything? Marshall’s return I’m sure has something to do with it, but we are steamrolling our top competitors. This is a confident team.

This is 100% correct and it has been that way for decades.

Not so much in this state, in this sport. Alabama itself has a hard time drawing crowds. Gaining relevance in basketball in this state will take playing and being successful against good non conference teams along with some NCAA success, IMO. Also faces some real logistical hurdles in regards to parking. Walking a long distance in the cold on a weeknight to watch SU vs .500 socon team is tough.
