It's easier to criticize, especially with our recent disastrous results. I know also that this post will not be popular, but I do hope that y'all will at least give these ideas some serious thought. The world of college basketball(and all of college athletics) has drastically changed recently. Things like the Transfer Portal, NIL, and player independence are why this is so. Let's say player Johnny X signs with Samford out of HS. He is a good player, but has not gotten the offers from the big boys for whatever reason. He lights it up and is obviously a player that has the big time talent. What will happen is that he will enter the portal and be gone after ONE year. The NCAA one time xfer rule means that if you sign the guy out of the Portal and he transfers to Samford he is now under the NCAA one time transfer rule. if you have done your due diligence, he is the kind of player that will fit in at Samford. Chances are this guy will be around for 2, 3, or even 4 years. Maybe the due diligence part is why we have had so many previous failures.
I don't like this scenario as much as I do the old method of building with players just out of HS. Today, however, smart coaches realize the truth and value of what I have just said, and unfortunately it has to be part of the new day strategy.

I agree. You have to get the best player available no matter if he's a transfer or out of high school. Schools like Samford should not and cannot expect their best players to stay with the program their entire college career. I would expect Stanton and Cardet to transfer at some point to go to a bigger school.
Our due diligence has been terrible. Maybe Bucky will do a better job? He sure didn't with Guess but maybe this will be the year we know for sure.

I don't know about Stanton, but I'm pretty certain that Cardet will NOT be transferring.

That's the challenge right? It's certainly difficult everywhere, buts it not impossible. Teams that do the best job keeping their rosters together will continue to have the most success. It starts with building a relationship of trust in the recruiting process, and requires finding kids that fit both your program and your campus from a culture standpoint. If we continue to sign classes every year of 5-7 players with 1-2 HS players, I don't see it working above more than say a .500 record. Samford basketball was always a multi year rebuild, but we seem to have lost all patience and have gone to trying to build a year to year roster. Just an opinion. Hope it works.

Last year Samford had 6 new freshmen on the roster. Several of those guys got little or no playing time and have left the program. I'd think the transfer portal contributed to some of those guys leaving. Looking back at the Padgett teams, it has been pointed out that 3 guys transferred out using the graduate pathway. They contibuted to big time programs in their one year move. Plus losing Nolan as a transfer was a big loss. Several of those guys were injured or had lingering illnesses in their last season at Samford. My question focuses on what made all them leave at one time? Was a rogue assistant or someone associated with the program making players unhappy causing them to leave? There's got to be more to that story than meets the eye. I'm still not concerned about last season especially with the coaching staff. I think the program is in good hands with our coaches. I like what I've seen with recruiting this season and am excited for the future of Samford basketball.

I thought we actually did a really good job playing the youngsters. That's the main reason I hated we missed so many games, those kids needed them. I think only one of the transfers out was a freshman. Just hope all the transfers brought in don't stunt those kids development. With what I believe is 15 kids on scholarship, that's going to be a real challenge.
In terms of the past transfers out, I would imagine it's a combination of issues.
