Check the Furman Roster and you will see Sirod Cook 5-11, 284 NG transfer from D-2 Wingate (announced xfer date was Jan. 27) who has never taken a snap in the Southern Conference. Is this the same Sirod Cook who is listed as a 2nd team All-SoCon DL? That is a sarcastic question of course, but how could he possibly be selected with those circumstances? Furman has a very good returner at this position named Xavier Stephens himself a xfer from Lehigh, who put up good numbers in a backup role for the Paladins last season. Cook may be great, I don't know, but to me this is kinda bizarre. I will laugh, however, if he doesn't even start after getting this honor.

You have to admit that a long snapper isn't usually selected as an all-conference offensive player. To equate that with the Furman selection this year, however, is not apples to apples. Alec Humes had appeared in 21 SoCon games when this selection had been made, so each school had seen him for 3 games. In addition to being a really reliable guy with the snaps, he was really fast downfield and often influenced the returner if he didn't tackle him.
This year's SoCon 2nd team Furman D-Lineman is a D-2 xfer who has never taken a single snap as a D-1 player, and it remains to be seen if he will even start for the Furple. More than strange - BIZARRE!

More than strange - BIZARRE! Samford had some amazing, experienced Student Trainers in 2015 as well. FUBeAR had admired their work for 2 years. FUBeAR remembers watching some ankles get taped on the sidelines. The scissors were flashing and glinting in the sunlight as the old tape job was effortlessly sliced away and the hands of these experts were invisible to the naked eye due to the alacrity with which they encircled the feet and lower legs of the Samford Players applying pre-wrap and tape so rapidly and perfectly it seemed a cross between ballet and a NASCAR pit stop. Should any of them have been named All SoCon Offensive Linemen? They played just as much OLine as that Long Snapper did. FUBeAR thinks it’s ridiculous that Cook was named All SoCon and even posted about it being wrong on the FU Board - comparing it to the Jackson State WR/DB, Travis Hunter, being named All-American before he ever took a college snap - before coming over here and seeing your post…and remembering that you had (and still do, obviously) supported the far, far more egregious ‘honoring’ of the Samford Long Snapper in 2015. At least Cook actually does play the position where he was selected All SoCon AND there is some excellent video of him available playing that position in college. 4 of his 2022 games were against ranked Teams and this was his Stat Line… DEFENSIVE LEADERS __________________Tackles _____Sacks ____Pass Defense Fumbles Blkd ____________GP Solo Ast Total TFL-Yds No-Yds Int-Yds BU PD Qbh Rcv-Yds FF Kick Saf 99 Sirod Cook 13 14 30 44 15.0 - 67 11.0 - 55 . 4 4 11 2 - 15 1 1 . 15 TFL’s & 11 Sacks - At least voters had video and strong stats to justify his selection at the position he plays. Naming Furman’s Cook a Preseason All SoCon Defensive Lineman in 2023 was not good. Naming the Samford Long Snapper as an All SoCon Offensive Lineman in 2015 was a travesty that made a mockery of the entire process. Anyone considering this objectively would have to agree. Shameless “Homers” might not.

Furman long snappers are good at bending over, getting a good grip on the ball and serving up the old pigskin to another guy. FUBear knows long snappers. Was FUBear a long snapper in college?

Furman long snappers are good at bending over, getting a good grip on the ball and serving up the old pigskin to another guy. FUBear knows long snappers. Was FUBear a long snapper in college? Absolutely - even recruited by North Carolina to be (primarily) a Long Snapper (until he sailed one from the 26 YL over his 6-5 Punter’s Head - out of the back of the end zone vs. his cross town rival HS…but that’s another story)…FUBeAR was (by FUBeAR’s choice) the back-up Long Snapper for most of his career at FU. So..no disrespect for Long Snappers, in general. But a Long Snapping Specialist is no more an Offensive Lineman than FUBeAR is a Brain Surgeon or an Astronaut or an Airline Pilot. It would have been no more egregious to have named that Samford Long Snapper as the All SoCon QB. He didn’t play QB either. What if we said…”Oh sorry, Jacob Huesman, this guy is really reliable and he does what Long Snappers are supposed to do really well. So, we’re gonna make him the All SoCon QB. That’s cool, right Jacob? Coach Huesman, you’re down with that too, right? Coach Hatcher and SU DOG said y’all wouldn’t mind cuz, y’know, he’s really reliable..and he’s played 3 years and all.” What’s the difference? Complete travesty. Completely disrespectful to every Offensive Lineman that has ever played or ever will play Offensive Line in the SoCon, and particularly disrespectful to those young men who were playing Offensive Line in the SoCon in 2015. How does SU DOG not see this? Honestly, whomever the best Women’s Tennis Player was in the SoCon in 2015 had as much of a claim to being an All SoCon Offensive Lineman as the Samford Long Snapper did. Would that have been OK with SU DOG?…If she was from Samford, and a fine young woman, it seems that it would have been.

And this choice of DL is totally disrespectful of Xavier Stephens. Do we even know that Cook will be the starter? Both choices should be considered ridiculous and maybe I would concede that one is about as bad as the other.

Hey, I think I see what is happening here. We are both taking this too personal. You as an old former O-Lineman and me as an old former HS defensive line coach. LOL!
