So, Samford Softball Season is a long way off, but the girls will start practice on Sept. 16. In watching the 18 and under National Championship Game from California on ESPNU that was played a couple of weeks ago (July 29), I was elated that Samford signee Katie Campbell had a good game. This game featured 30 college signees off the 2 teams. The pitcher for Katie's opponent was a South Carolina Gamecocks signee who struck out 10 of the first 11 batters that she faced. Katie was the starting catcher and clean-up hitter for her team the Rock Gold from the south Florida area. Katie knocked in the first run of the game with a single in the 4th inning. Her team went on to win the National Championship 5-3.
The first thing you will notice about Katie Campbell is that she is a BIG girl that is very athletic for her size. She might even be called the "Sonny D" of Samford Softball. She hit .513 her final season with Mariner HS in Cape Coral FL and broke the school record for RBIs. She is every bit an SEC caliber player and will probably lead the SoCon in intentional walks this season. I don't know how our coaching staff managed to get her but from her Twitter posts she is all-in for Samford. BTW, there are 4 other signees that have incredible bios also. There's no way these 5 won't be starters this coming Spring. IMO, Samford Softball is about to dominate.
Check out this short video (Junior Season) to get an idea of how big and powerful that Katie Campbell is.

BTW, I just accidentally found that there is another Samford Athlete from the same high school as Katie Campbell. Samford Soccer All-SoCon terrific player Taylor Yount Gr. is also from there. Found that while looking for Miss State comments, but those I did not find. Funny, but they did mention their 3-0 Exhibition win over Kennesaw State.
