I think it looks pretty cheesy, but college athletics in general looks pretty darn cheesy to me, so . . . .
All they are doing is to let the alumni give cash to the players. 03 has been doing that for years under the table. It is simply legitimizing what was commonly done at most major institutions that would get your program sanctioned. What was looked on as somewhat honorable, at least until you got caught, is now sanctioned (i.e. no longer cheating). It looks as sleazy as it has always been, it is just out in the open now. If you are more comfortable handing your money directly to the players with a golden handshake, I encourage you to keep on keeping on. If you want to donate it to let the coach pay the players, you can now do that too. It is sanctioned all over the place. With that being said, more power to them. College athletics has always been sleazy, typically at or above our level of competition. Now we are just trying to compete in a sleazy world. You do not recruit your players anymore, you buy them. It is all just done out in the open.
What school is known as Free Shoes University (hint, its initials are FSU)?
Who did Uncle Luke support? Hint, it is a school in South Florida near the city of Miami.
What school's Heisman candidate had to return his trophy? Hint, its near UCLA in Southern California.
What school's defensive coordinator sent steaks over to his favorite player in need and told him to "keep it down home, cuz" (and his player who he benefited secretly recorded him and turned him in . . . and kept the steaks and the money)? Hint, it is the loveliest village on the plain.
I could go on and on and on. None of that stuff is illegal now. That sleazy stuff that makes an honorable man's skin crawl is legitimate now and the price of competing. It is all out in the open. College athletics has dropped the pretense of respectability and just decided to be what it has always been--shamelessly all about the Benjamins. Let's buy us a championship!
