Samford football uses the portal to go out and get the best talent possible, not just what’s expedient, close and easy. Today the football braintrust picked up a commitment for a D3 running back from Birmingham Southern. I saw nothing about PWO, or walk on, it just said committed in a big announcement. What am I missing here?

I can't answer your questions about his recruiting status as I wonder myself, but this kid is from a HS (Helena) that is .5 miles from my house. I know that he was the team captain here and was a brilliant student. He was an All-Shelby County Honorable Mention running back. He has decent size and speed, but not sure it is D-1 level. At BSC he had good success and averaged 4.4 yds/carry. He should make a good reserve and team player. Great kid and I sure wish him the best.

His highlights look ok, but not dazzling and he certainty isn’t breaking away and showing next level speed against D3 competition. I don’t know about recruiting players intentionally for a back up and I’m aware we had two exceptional nonscholarship players who turned into scholarship all conference players later in their careers, but trying to get lightening to strike again is not how you build a program. I want D1A caliber athletes who are better than the above average D1aa athlete on my roster. Too much of the “my system is so good, it doesn’t matter who is running it” mentality. That’s why we get manhandled by teams like Furman and UTC. Because they have grown men on their rosters.
Maybe he’s a preferred walk on. We’ll see.

You can’t really undervalue that kind of production.

Seth Parker, a DB from Columbia University has chosen Samford. He is also a returning to home player who played HS ball at Hoover. Has had a pretty good career at CU making 2nd Team All-Ivy League. One service has him rated as a 2** Portal Transfer.
