40 years ago today according to TR on FB, Samford hired Kim Alsop to rebuild Samford football (Lavern Farmer, the pipe smoking Howard Schnellenberger wannabe, was the AD). On the student advisory committee to hire Alsop was one Mrs. Cujo. I, Cujo, was in St. Pete Florida doing my best to end up selling t-shirts on the beach and going nowhere decent and respectable fast. Alsop was the coach at my high school. He approached me about going to Samford, knowing I had passed up on all of my offers to play in college for the less ambitious opportunity at a junior college (in theory, at least, I had enrolled but like last chance U, considered attending class as optional) and had dropped out after the fall semester to pursue my first love of beer, women and good times.
Coach Alsop put the big rush on me, (and with the benefit of my mom’s prayers) and 4 months later I arrived in Birmingham, suitcase with all my possessions in hand and the shirt on my back and was met by coach Kline at the airport. During summer camp I ran into Mrs. Cujo, who I found attractive and . . . to make a long story short, she took the biggest risk of her life and laid all of her chips on me against the advice of all of her friends and here we are 40 years later. All because she recommended Alsop for the job, who took it and who recruited me and who brought me to Alabama (not even on my radar) where I met Mrs. Cujo, who I fell in love with. Don’t tell me the Lord doesn’t work in mysterious ways.

And a friendship that has endured and lasted the test of time, in spite of one of the most lopsided personal rivalries in the history of L.S.U. (LakeShore University). And yes, the Lord does work in mysterious ways because the irony of that personal rivalry is that I would end up being the strength coach for the children of Kevin Williams and Alonzo Highsmith in my time at The s.U....,,,, jealous aren't you, admit it. Trust me Cuj for those of us who were blessed with our spouses in our time at The s.U. we all outpunted our coverage.

Several of the px in that video are not from 1984. I think that’s because the camera had only recently been invented and they were scarce.

Much better memories than ours of the summer of 1984. The USAF had moved us to San Antonio, where it's in the mid 80's at 10pm, into a brand new tract-built home with interest rates at 14.5%. Then, in less than 3 weeks after moving in, the AC quit working. Mrs77 still does not look fondly back at her time in Texas.
