Sunday the Samford women's soccer team takes on Furman in the SoCon Championship game for like the 50th consecutive time. These teams have a rivalry with Furman stealing a win last year. Earlier this year Samford dished out a _urman @$$ whipping that literally beat the F out of them. I expect _urman to be up for this game and to come out fast and furious trying to get their F back. If Samford can weather the initial storm and play its/their game, I like our ladies to take this one and keep their SoCon perfect record perfect and to improve upon their #35 RPI national ranking.
There is no super star on this team, just solid across the board and deep. The backline is arguably the best in the SoCon, with the defensive player of the year and the runner up (in my opinion) anchoring the center. Two SoCon first team worthy outside backs complete the line. Samford scores off of set pieces, through possession and on counter attacks. They are dangerous in every phase of the game and keep up constant pressure on the opponent's back line. Most of the SoCon has tried to equalize the imbalance of power/talent by counter attacking and that is exactly what I expect _urman's to do--they have dangerous forwards who can score off the dribble.
I hate I will not be able to make this game, but hopefully I'll be able to catch it on the ESPN network. If you will be in town, try to get out there to support our team. But this is why we play, to win championships. This team and the whole program have demonstrated what this board expects of its athletic teams. Tough; gritty; not perfect, but it isn't for lack of trying; winners, champions.
